  9.  AB    This study examines the range of ambulatory care services provided to
  10.        people with HIV, or screened for HIV. It involved a 2 or 3 week
  11.        prospective data collection of services provided on an ambulatory basis
  12.        at 14 hospitals and clinics, including one private general practice.
  13.        Data for ambulatory consultations, HIV screening services and same day
  14.        patients were included. Detailed demographic, clinical and treatment
  15.        information (including CD4 cell count, Centres for Disease Control HIV
  16.        surveillance category, level of disability, diagnostic tests ordered,
  17.        treatment procedures conducted and data on medications) was captured for
  18.        each client presentation. Apart from the development of a visit-based
  19.        casemix classification, the analysis has allowed us to build a unique
  20.        profile of clients being treated in ambulatory care, as well as
  21.        describing the utilisation of clinician care and ancillary services.
  22.        Major findings of the study, of interest both from the perspective of
  23.        clinical medicine and HIV Clinical Unit management, will be presented.
